1. Who handles nuisance complaints pertaining to animals in the City?

The Animal Control Officer can answer any questions or concerns regarding animals. She can be reached by contacting the Bridgeport Police Department at (940) 683-3430.

2. Where can I buy a garage sale permit?

Garage sale permits can be purchased at the Development Services or Utility window in City Hall, located at 900 Thompson Street, for the cost of $5.

3. Where can I put my garage sale signs?

Two garage sale signs may be placed on the property in which the sale will occur. Any signs posted throughout the City will be removed and property owners will be subject to a fine up to $500. We recommend advertising your garage sale in the newspaper.

Municipal Court

1. I just received a ticket. What do I do now?

You have several options, depending on why you were given the citation. Contact our office at 940-683-3420 to discuss your options and to get the information that will help you process your ticket.

2. What is deferred disposition?

It is somewhat like “probation.” If you qualify and choose to do a deferral, and if you meet all the requirements in a timely matter, the citation will stay off your driving record.

3. Will a driver safety course benefit me?

The driver safety course is also referred to as “ defensive driving.” The driver safety course informs you of driver responsibility and works to heighten your awareness when you are on the road. If you receive a citation, and you meet the requirements, taking this course will prevent the citation from showing up on your driving record. Numerous insurance agencies also offer a discount for drivers who have completed such a course.

4. Can I have some time to pay out my citation?

We can give you a thirty-day extension with no additional cost to you. You just have to come in and fill out the form. If you cannot make it in, we can also mail you the form. You have to contact the court and request a pay out over the mail. If you pass the thirty-day deadline, the State imposes a Time Payment Fee of $25.00 per citation, and then gives you an additional thirty days to complete payment. If you need longer to pay, you will need to set a court date so that you can ask for an extended period of time.

5. Will it cost me more money to have a trial?

There is no additional cost to actually have a trial. However, if you are found guilty, the fine amount imposed may be greater than the original fine. (If you have a jury trial, they are given a dollar amount range from which they may determine your fine, if they find you guilty.) If you are found “not guilty”, you will pay nothing.

6. What form of payment do you accept?

We accept money orders, cashier checks, and cash.

7. I received a citation for no liability insurance, but I have insurance. What do I do?

You will need to present proof to the court prior to your court date in the form of an insurance card that shows the following:
1) You and the vehicle are covered. 2) Effective and expiration dates.
3) The insurance agents’ information for verification purposes.

8. My inspection sticker, vehicle registration or driver license was expired. Now that I have gotten them renewed, do I still have to pay the fine?

If you will come into our office and show your receipt on or before the court appearance date, we can dismiss these charges with a $10.00 dismissal fee, if it has been expired for less than 60 days.

1. What is required to turn on water/electric temporarily so that I can clean an empty house or do some maintenance?

The City will set up a temporary account for two weeks to cleanup and do any repairs. Utilities will be charged based on consumption.

2. I had a leak; can I get an adjustment on my water bill?

The City will make adjustments for sewer charges when a leak occurs, because leaks do not always cause water to be sent back into the sewer system.

3. Does the City make exceptions in hardship cases?

The City will work with any customer that is experiencing difficulty paying. We can extend the time that certain payments are due or make payment plans of up to three months for large balances. In no case are charges reduced or eliminated for hardship reasons.

4. I want service, but I have a delinquent bill from an old account. How can I get service?

Pay the past due amount from your old account and put up a $250 deposit.

5. My utilities were cut-off and the Utility Billing Department says that I have to pay another deposit and reconnect fees to re-establish service. Why?

After a meter is cut-off, we wait 5-7 days to hear from the customer. If the customer has not contacted us, we final out the account. If the customer has a deposit, it is applied to the account. To re-establish service, the customer must pay the old account in full, pay a $15 fee per service, and post a deposit that may be increased based on prior history.

6. Can I turn my water/electric back on myself?

Absolutely not. Tampering with a meter is considered theft of service, and our policy is to prosecute all thefts of service.

7. My utilities have been cut-off. How do I re-establish service?

The past due amount must be paid plus a $15 reconnect fee per service. Your water/electric will be turned back on the same day if the payment is received before 3 p.m.

8. Why was I not notified in person before my water/electric was cut-off?

If your payment is not received by the due date, the City sends out a disconnect notice telling you the amount that is due and the date we will disconnect the utilities. This notice is the only notification you will receive. Our meter crew is instructed to turn off the water/electric and quickly leave to avoid any kind of confrontation. They are not allowed to collect payment in the field, nor are they authorized to negotiate terms to re-establish service.

9. Why was I asked to bring my lease agreement or home purchase contract with me to setup a water/electric account?

If the previous occupant of your home had water/electric service terminated for non-payment, we want to establish that you are a new occupant and are not responsible for the debt that was left owing. It also helps us establish the correct address to service.

10. Why is my water bill so high this month?

There could be several reasons for abnormally high water use. Among them are:

1. Watering the yard and landscaping.
2. A change in the number of people living in the household.
3. A leak in the plumbing system, fixture, or water using appliance.
4. A faulty water meter.
5. An incorrect meter reading.

If you suspect a bad meter or an incorrect reading, call the Utility Billing Department at (940) 683.3403.

11. Why are my sewer charges higher than my water charges?

It is less expensive to operate a water system in this area than a sewer system. Ground water is readily available and requires very little treatment before it is pumped into the water system. Once the water has been used, however, it requires a multi-stage process to filter out the impurities and clean the water to the standards required by our sewer treatment plant.

12. I paid my bill; why did I receive a disconnect notice?

We either received your payment after the disconnect notices were printed, or we did not receive it at all. Call the Utility Billing Department at (940) 683.3403 to make sure your payment arrived. This is the only disconnect notice you will receive.

13. I will not be able to pay my utility bill before the cut-off date. What should I do?

Call the utility Billing Department at (940)683-3403 to request an extension. We will allow one additional week to make the payment.
